Volunteer Extraordinaire – May/June 2011
Mark is a man full of surprises…Just when you think you know him a little better, he reveals a different side.
Mark was born in Vancouver and attended school and University here. He has been married to Sandra for almost 50 years with two daughters, Samantha & Julie.
When he talked about his childhood, he referred to himself as a “geek”. He loved playing with anything that was mechanical, taking things apart and putting them back together. His interest in electronics and sound led to a jog assembling stereo components and selling home entertainment systems. Oh yes, he also loved radio and became a “ham operator”.
After leaving university, he went into the family business, Jermaines, where he worked until the store closed. He then went into business for himself and ought an alarm company, Pacific Protective Systems. During this time, he help form the Alarm Association of B.C., later serving as president.
Mark has been affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of BC and is serving on the board. He volunteers as a councilor with the Career Connection.
After selling his alarm company, Mark decided to try his hand a tour guide. He received a license to drive a buse and worked with the Vancouver Trolley Co.
Is it any wonder that we chose him as a “Volunteer Extraordinaire”? His experience and skills have benefited the JCC enormously. He serves as a Vice Charman on the Seniors’ Advisory Board and is always helping with our sound systems for the concerts. He does repairs, drives the bus on excursions and has advised us on setting up the computer course. He will also be teaching it.
Thank you Mark for everything you have contributed.
